  1. Grades ARE exchanged for all manner of reward, not the least being admission into college for high school students. They are exchanged for the degree itself. (Absence of grades — i.e. an F — means you don’t get one.) They are exchanged for jobs. They are exchanged for scholarships, emotional rewards, awards, and so on.
  2. I don’t know what school you were ever in, but many students — and arguably most of the good ones — see grades as a symbol of worth or value over each other. In other words, competition.
  3. Grades are most certainly a limited resource, as any teacher who gives all A’s and then had a nice chat with Admin can attest.
  4. Nothing ‘prevents’ anyone from making the same amount of money as anyone else either, and yet here we are.
