I’d agree if this was the only factor involved. But this is just one in number of forces acting on the teacher’s relationship with his or her student. Some include the incredibly powerful and punitive damage of failure, the absence of meaningful connection between any single assignment and a student’s potential future, and the vast limitations placed on the student and teacher by the system we’ve created.
