As a teacher of English and history from grades 5 to college, it's impossible to get a sense of what the new technology of ChatGPT and other generative AI means for education. Because we now have the equivalent of the machine that once eliminated the need to go out and cut firewood or dig coal to heat your home, light the night, and cook your food. Once that technology occured, we no longer either educated our children in those tasks or demanded they go do them.

It's not merely that generative AI can perform so much of the laborious, boring, soul-sucking work of the modern information driven market, thus eliminating those jobs. It's that education is completely dedicated to creating humans who can do that work.
