Universities are constructed atop a foundation that begins in Kindergarten. The divisions by age, compartmentalized subjects, and absence of choice — all those institutional structures that define the classroom experience and remove agency — begin long before college. The process of giving students choices and autonomy, of creating a genuine user based experience, is lost somewhere near the end of Elementary school, when the curriculum becomes increasingly rigid and bureaucratic, increasingly driven by tests, and decreasingly autonomous — precisely when it should be moving in the other direction. It’s hard to imagine significant change at the University level beyond the cosmetic without reaching down into Primary and Secondary education.
