On this day, more than a billion letters of affection are sent — Writer’s Almanac
Who can compete with all that love?
This one, a single voice out of billions;
none can be distinguished among the roar,
each a flake in a blizzard of attention.
Hard to believe we live in a hurricane of love,
what with the state of the world,
and the slow steady drumbeat of life
and all the daily acts of appetite.
But there it is, a billion strong.
I’ll add my own quiet voice
and perhaps out of static might come
the comfort and song of a heart.
