Maybe I'm being idealistic or simplistic, but I often think about the way a thing with a direct cause will, as it starts bumping into other things, gain a kind of momentum that pushes it further and further from its origin. Eventually it becomes something else entirely, often something truly profound.

Sure, we might build a monument to some man's genetically propelled ego and power, but there are moments when the result is so distant from the cause that it becomes its own very different thing. A musician might write the song to get the chicks, but something happens on that journey to song that changes the music into something that doesn't serve propagation, something genuinely profound and meaningful.
